Commentary
Circumstances of “the Battle of the Clans” are being described
now for manifesting those instructions which were given to the Messenger
(grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and the Believers in the
previous verses. During fourth or fifth Hijrah, the Jews of Banu
Nazayer, who were expatriated from Madinah due to their wicked
deeds, excited great tribes of Arab to attack on Madinah. Historians have
guessed that their manpower strength was twelve thousand. Opposite to them, the
Muslims were three thousand including some of the Hypocrites among them. A
ditch was dug around Madinah. On one bank of the ditch were Infidels of
Arab and on the other bank were Muslims – standing to confront each other. They
faced one another for twenty to twenty five days.
On the other side, were the Jews of the tribe of Banu
Qurayzah, who were dwelling in a strong fort on eastern side of Madinah.
They broke their treaty with Muslims and joined the Infidels.
It is commanded: O you who have
believed, remember the favor of Allaah Almighty upon you, when Armies
came to attack you, and We sent upon them a wind and Armies of Angels (peace be
upon them), to whom you did not see. You were in such condition that your
enemies had encircled you collectively from eastern border of Madinah
which was at height and western border which was below the sea level. You were
very afraid, your so-called supporters had turned away their eyes and your hearts
reached the throats.
