Commentary
It is commanded: This particular privilege has
been granted to you {O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon
him)} for the purpose that your precious time would not be spent in useless
disputes, and your real duties; which are required to be fulfilled by you, may
not be disturbed. And it all happened under the control of God’s Epithet of
forgiveness and mercy. Accordingly, you have been empowered to keep your wives in
accordance with your will, whether you set aside any of them or take to
yourself whom you will. And if any that you desire to receive again of those
wives from whom you had temporarily separated, it depends upon you.
In short, there is neither any restriction upon
you concerning your wives and nor it is necessary that you should give equal
time to your all wives turn by turn as it is incumbent on those husbands who
have more than one wives.
The Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace,
glory, blessings and peace be upon him) had full authority concerning his wives
that he could keep his wives as he desired. Even then, he (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon him) did never reap advantage from this leave, but
he remained with every wife with justice during everyone’s turn, and fulfilled
the rights of all of them equally.
