And the Commandment of Allah must be fulfilled.

Commentary

It is commanded: When pleasure of marriage had been over and Zayd had no longer any need for his wife Zainab, then We married her to you O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) in order that the Believers should not hesitate in marriage with the wives of their adopted sons after passing of the waiting period (‘iddat); when after marriage they no longer have any need of them and divorce them. In this connection it was the Commandment of Allaah Almighty which can never be avoided.

In most of the nations of the world, it has become prevalent that children of others are adopted as own children. The same custom was in Arab also that to whom one would have adopted own son by one’s tongue, then he was considered as one’s real son and his entire matters were treated like the real son.

Allaah Almighty desired to finish this tradition from the Muslims for ever. At first this Commandment was revealed in Holy Qur’an that adopted sons are not equal to real sons. After that it was shown practically that the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) adopted Zayd as his son. Then it was commanded that you should tie the nuptial knot of Zayd with Zainab daughter of Jahsh, who is your paternal cousin sister. When they got married then disagreed to each other and used to dispute often.

Zayd divorced Zainab (May Allaah be pleased with them). Then it was commanded: We married Zainab to you O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). In this connection he was still in hesitation. Then it was commanded: It is not a matter of will. We have to settle such case like this.
