Commentary

In the commencing Section of this Chapter, it was commanded: The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is closer to the Believers than their selves and his wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) are as their mothers. With effect from this verse, it is being instructed to his wives that they should choose such way of life which should be a pattern for their descendants, that is to say, Believers (men and women – both). Domestic life of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was very simple. Whatever used to come; was spent and then they used to dwell in poverty. The wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) would have desired after looking that financial support is given to the people, so they should also be provided enough so that they may live comfortably.

Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was unpleasant when he heard this from his wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) and began to think. At last these verses were revealed and it was caused to understand thoroughly: You have to become example for the entire Muslims, accordingly you should decide that whether you would like to accept this responsibility or otherwise!

If they (wives) desire the worldly life and its adornment {O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)}, then you should say to them: I will provide for you and divorce graciously. But if you choose the Hereafter and desire to live at a Messenger’s home, then you would have to live as you will be directed.

Muslim women should learn from it that they should live like their blessed mothers (May Allaah be pleased with them). If they will disregard it and follow own wishes then they will be called undutiful descendants.
