Commentary

Qarna – (Stay!), it is a word of command for feminine plural from the word waqar, which means “to stay satisfactorily and comfortably”.

Tabarruja – (to display oneself, to rise), it is from the word baraj, which means “a thing at height and apparent”. Tabarraj means “to raise, to show, to display”. Here it aims “to come out from home in such garments, by which beauty of the body is displayed as walking naked”.

‘Al-Jaahi-liyyatil- ‘uulaa – (the times of ignorance), the women used to wander nearly without dress shamelessly during those days and were desirous that the men should see them.

It is commanded: If you will speak with soft tone and by making signals, then such people; in whose heart is disease; will be covetous and desirous of evil. Therefore, whenever it becomes necessary for you to talk with any third person, then you should speak always with appropriate speech in hard accent, abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as – the women (who were unaware of civility and customs) used to display beautiful parts of their bodies during the former times of ignorance, so that the men should see them and incline towards them. You should give up such manners, stay at your homes with dignity and bear in mind those Established Orders which have been explained in Suratun-Nuur (Chapter “Light” - 24). You should establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allaah Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).
