18. And We set, between
them and the towns which We had blessed, towns easy to be seen, and We made
the stage between them easy, (saying): Travel in them safely both by night
and day.
19a. But they said: Our
Lord! Make the stage between our journeys longer.

Commentary
The aim from those towns, which were blessed, is the towns of the
Country of Syria. From the territory of Sheba, which is in the Country of Yemen,
the Arabians’ Caravans of the Traders used to travel for Syria and back. They used
to carry, those Indian goods which were deported in Yemen, to Syria. And from
Syria, they used to transport those goods to the Country of Egypt via Aqbah
(Aylah). Movement of the people used to remain every time in this entire
way. And they used to travel stage to stage fearlessly.
It is commanded: A Highway was established for the Caravan from
Yemen to Syria and back, and the Caravans used to travel hither and thither
regularly. There was no risk of theft, robbery, hunger or thirst. Allaah
Almighty had commanded: The people can travel day and night on this way without
fear or danger. Journey of every stage is not afar and every required thing is
available at every stage. But they oppressed that they did not esteem this
blessing and began to say: Enjoyment of the journey would be at that time when we
would have to travel in difficulties. Journey from one stage to the other
should be hard; we have to suffer hunger and thirst. After passing many stages
the form of rest and comfort should be availed.
In short, they had been disgusted from comfortable journey, so
they longed for difficulties. Even they began to say by their tongues also: our
Lord! Lengthen the distance between the stages
of our journeys.
