Commentary

‘Ashudda – (adolescence, youth), generally this is age between eighteen and thirty three years.

‘Istawaa – (full grown), this word is in past tense from the word ‘astawaa, which has passed in Surah Huud and Suratul-Mu’-minuun. Here it aims “became physically and mentally mature”. Moses (peace be upon him) was brought up by the funds provided by Pharaoh under the shade of his mother. Naturally he (peace be upon him) was mentally mature with good habits which should be in a good and abstinent person.

It is commanded: When Moses (peace be upon him) reached the age of full strength and maturity (became mentally and physically fit), then on a day; he was passing in the city. At that time the people were taking rest and jollity was limited. He (peace be upon him) saw that two men were quarreling with each other on the road.

Two groups were inhabitants of the Country of Egypt. People of one of them were old natives, who were called Qabtii (Coptic). Rulers of the Country (Pharaoh and his chiefs) were from them.
The Children of Israel were in another group, to whom; Joseph (peace be upon him) peopled in Egypt during his time of power. At that time, they were subject and oppressed.

Two men, who were quarreling with each other, one of them was from the Coptic group and the other was from the Children of Israel {own tribe of Moses (peace be upon him)}.
