Commentary

It was mentioned earlier that they went beyond bounds in the arrogance of Allaah Almighty. Someone says: We are all in all and can do whatever we desire. No one can prevent us. Allaah, the life after death, reward and punishment of good and evil deeds – these all are self-made matters. Goodness and badness of deeds are nothing. That is good which we say and that is bad which we say. None can interfere in our matters.

It is the consequence of such thought and such kind of behavior that a severe disaster is near to come upon them in the world.
Therefore, the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and his followers have been instructed in this verse that every individual should seek protection from the Wrath of Allaah Almighty and say in these words: My Lord! Do not include me in the wrath along with these disobedient people if Your wrath is coming upon them during my life and keep me saved from the entire misfortunes; by Your mercy.

O  Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)! We have full Power in this matter that We can send the same wrath upon them forthwith before you from which they are being frightened, but presently they are being given respite, so that who of them is desirous to choose the right path, may choose. Therefore you should do with them good against bad. We are Best Aware of that which they have been doing and whatever they have been saying. If they did not refrain then very soon they will be punished very severely. You should turn towards your Lord and pray in these words: Our Lord! Save us from Your Wrath.
