Commentary

Maw-‘idun – (tryst, promise). Meanings of wa’dah and maw-‘idun are the same.

Malka – (power of choice, option, authority, ability), origin of this word is ma-la-ka, which is origin of malak too. It is used for “will, intention, mind etc.”

Moses (peace be upon him) used to cause to understand the Children of Israel: If you will obey my sayings, wealth of the religion and the world will be bestowed unto you. Shortly, Allaah Almighty will send His Scripture for your guidance. If you will follow the Commandments mentioned in that Scripture, success will kiss your feet.

The Children of Israel had observed personally that they were delivered from the misfortune as slavery; by obeying the command of Moses (peace be upon him). He (peace be upon him) has been rebuking them due to their worshipping of calf that “Has the appointed time passed too long that you forgot my sayings and did not trust in my promise? Or did you get ready on disobedience intentionally and did so much dangerous act that there is fear of falling down the wrath of Allaah Almighty upon you? Yet nearly one month earlier, I caused to understand you that I have been called on the Mount Toor for bringing Torah from Allaah Almighty. In these a few days, you forgot my promise and were involved in the evil of polytheism.

By this menace, the eyes of the Children of Israel were opened and they perceived that really they had erred great. They said to Moses (peace be upon him): We did not make any such plan intentionally that by rejecting your sayings, we should determine any separate religion or way of life.
