Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

46.  And argue not with the People of the Scripture  unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our God and your God is One, and unto Him we surrender.
46.  Wa  laa  tujaadiluuu  ‘Ahlal-Kitaabi  ‘illaa  billatii  hiya  ‘ahsanu,  ‘illallaziina  zalamuu  minhum  wa  quuluu  ‘aamannaa  Billazii  ‘Unzila  ‘ilaynaa  wa  ‘Unzila  ‘ilaykum  wa  ‘Ilaahunaa  wa  ‘Ilaahukum  Waahidunw-wa  nahnu  laHuu  Muslimuun.

Commentary

Laa  tujaadiluu – (Do not argue), it is in negative tense from the word mujaadalatun, another form of which is jadaal. Jadaal has come out from the word jadal, which means “dispute”. Jadaal means “questioning and answering each other, which is called “Mubaahisah” (argument, dispute, debate, discussion etc.)

In the verse mentioned in previous lesson, Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and by means of him; Muslims were commanded: Recite Holy Qur’an and establish worship (Prayer) regularly!

It has been commanded in this verse: When other people will hear from you such sayings, they will desire to quarrel with you. You should cause to understand softly and with gentleness to those who are the People of the Scripture from them and who believe in their Prophets (peace be upon them). You should not argue with them for grieving. However you can behave strictly with those of them who begin to do wrong by violence and commit injustice.

You should explain before them softly who do not trouble you that, “We believe in both – your heavenly Scriptures (Torah, Psalms and Gospel) and our heavenly Scripture (Holy Qur’an) that those all are true.

Our God and your God (both of us) is One; and we follow the Commandments of only the Same Real God. We do not ascribe any plurality or equal to Him, because we believe that there is none who may be able to be His partner. You also should do the same and believe that Holy Qur’an is a True Book. If you agree, then there is no difference between both of us (you and we).
