wizards came they said unto Pharaoh: Will there surely be a reward for us if
we are the winners?
42. He said: Yes, and
ye will then surely be of those brought near (to me).

Commentary
The wizards were called and gathered from all over the Country
and it was announced: On the day of our great Fair, after rising of the sun,
our wizards will stand opposite to Moses (peace be upon him). There is a strong
hope that they will surmount and we shall be able to follow them openly,
pushing Moses (peace be upon him) back. After defeat, he (peace be upon him)
will not be able to blame us that we are unjust.
Eventually, the day of Fair came. Pharaoh attended the Fair
Ceremony along with his companions. Common people arrived at the field in
troops and the field was filled up. Mean while the wizards came also and they
tried to strike a bargain with Pharaoh before confronting against Moses (peace
be upon him), as it is a custom of sorcerers even now that before showing their
jugglery, they fix their wages by discussion with their callers. Here; their caller
was a King and the work also was not ordinary. They said: Our reward must be very
weighty if we gained over. Should we have belief in it?
Pharaoh had understood from the statement of the circumstances
that Ministers of his State had told him: Do not punish Moses and his brother (peace
be upon them) in this manner. Arrange; at first; a competition between the
wizards of your Country and Moses (peace be upon him); if he is a wizard!
Dependence of getting rid of Moses (peace be upon him) was on the victory of
the wizards of his Country. He said quickly! Besides distinguishing gifts, wealth
and property, I shall appoint you among those brought near to me and you will
become my dear companions. Don’t worry! If you won, all people will be in your
service.
