Commentary
After taking strong promise of reward from Pharaoh, they (the
wizards) stepped towards Moses (peace be upon him) and said: Will you assault
at first or should we? Moses (peace be upon him) had observed that they had heard
that I {Moses (peace be upon him)} throw staff on the earth which becomes a
serpent, they have collected cords and staves for throwing on the earth, and
they will fling them in the field. And it will seem to the people that those all
have been moving like serpents.
After looking their things, Moses (peace be upon him) said: Throw
your cords and staves first! When the wizards heard these words, they began to
repeat the meaningless words and shouted “By Pharaoh’s might, we will be the
winners”. Then they threw their large cords and staves on the ground. But as it
is a famous proverb that “A lie does not have feet”, like this, “The magic does
not have any strong root”. The people thought that those cords and staves had
been moving like snakes, but in fact those remained the same (cords and staves).
When Moses (peace be upon him) looked this, he spoke: Praise be
to Allaah. And by His name, he threw his staff in the field. It was
neither a lie and nor any play. The staff used to become really a serpent by
the Power of Allaah Almighty and it had more power than any serpent. As soon
as it was thrown on the ground, it began to swallow those imaginary snakes
which were actually cords and staves. Then the entire field was clear and the
Truth was manifest.
