but mortals like us, who would fain turn us away from what our fathers used
to worship; then bring us some clear warrant.

Commentary
Maximum people of
Makkah were not ready for hearing the Sayings of Muhammad, Messenger of Allah
Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). They are being caused
to understand in these verses that they should not have any doubt in
omnipotence of Allah Almighty. He has established this way for guidance of
mankind that He sends His Messengers (peace be upon them) unto the people.
Behold! The people before you refused the Messengers (peace be upon them) of
their times, so they were ruined.
They said: We do
not see any particular quality in Ye (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon
him). You are a man just like us. Moreover, as other people are selfish, we
consider that certainly; You would also be like them.
Many generations of
ours have passed adoring idols, due to which, we have been receiving abundant
offerings, dedicated things and gifts on the names of those idols. You (grace,
glory, blessings and peace be upon him) are desirous to snatch from us those
entire offerings, dedicated things and gifts etc. You wish to reap the same
advantages by introducing your separate Worshipped (God Almighty). We are not
such mad that we may not understand it. Show us any extraordinary exploit; by
which our hearts are confuted naturally that You (grace, glory, blessings and
peace be upon him) are a great person, if You want so much great vicissitude.
How can we vacate this Seat without it, for You; obeying Your command? Mind
your own business (God forbid).
