Threat of stoning to death

Chapter Shu-‘araaa’”- (The Poets) - 26

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

111.  They said: Shall we put faith in thee, when the lowest (of the people) follow thee?

112.  He said: And what knowledge have I of what they may have been doing (in the past)?

113.  Lo! their reckoning is my Lord’s concern, if ye but knew.

114.  And I am not (here) to repulse Believers.

115.  I am only a plain Warner.

116.  They said: If thou cease not, O Noah! Thou will surely be among those stoned (to death).
111.  Qaaluuu  ‘anu’-minu  laka  wattaba-‘akal-‘arzaluun.

112.  Qaala  wa  maa  ‘ilmii  bi-maa  kaanuu  ya’-maluun.

113.  ‘In  hisaabuhum  ‘illaa  ‘alaa  Rabbii  law  tash-‘uruun.

114.  Wa  maa  ‘anaa  bitaaridil-Mu’-miniin.

115.  ‘In  ‘anaa  ‘illaa  naziirum-mubiin.

116.  Qaaluu  la-‘illam  tantahi  yaa-Nuuhu  latakuu-nanna  minal- marjuumiin.

Commentary

Taaridi – (that; who repels others), this is the subject from tarada, which means “to drive out by threatening”.

Lam  tantahi – (If you ceased not), the word tantahii is from ‘intihaa, which has been derived from nahii. ‘Intihaa means “termination, finish, to stop”. Nahii means “to block, to prevent, to hinder”.

After hearing the Message of Noah (peace be upon him), the people of his folk said: How can we acknowledge your sayings, while the people; who are the lowest in our society, are your obedient? Noah (peace be upon him) said: I don’t know concerning their status and work, nor I need to be aware of it. It is clear, if you think that their reckoning is Allaah’s concern. All Believers are equal among themselves. I cannot repulse such people who are ready to hear and accept my sayings. My duty is to warn only to every person plainly from the consequences of wicked deeds.

They said: O Noah (peace be upon him)! If you did not cease, then surely we shall stone you to death.
