Commentary
Yadra-‘u – (it shall avert, it shall remove),
origin of this word is dar-‘un, which means “to remove, to repel”, that
is to say, if the woman gives testimony four times, it will avert the punishment
from her.
The husband who accuses his wife of adultery and is unable to
prove his claim by four witnesses, he will be asked to say before the court
four times clearly that “I swear by Allaah that in this matter, that is
to say; in accusing own wife, I speak the truth. I do not tell a lie”. By
repeating these words four times, it will be considered that this testimony is
of four men. After that, at fifth time, he would have to say, “The curse of
Allah on me if I am of those who lie”. If the husband denies from saying above
mentioned prescribed words, then he will be imprisoned, and he will not be
released until he says these words or accepts that he is a liar. If he accepts
that he told a lie, then punishment of Qazf i.e. scourging with eighty
stripes will be given to him.
If the man said above mentioned words then the woman will be
directed to say four times those words, which have been recorded in the next
part of the verse 8(b). If the woman denies saying those words or accepts that
her husband spoke the truth, then she will be punished by stoning to death (Rajam).
