Commentary

Laa  tubazzir – (you should not squander), it is a negative sentence from the word tabziir, from which the word mubazzir is “a subject”. Plural of mubazzir is mubazziriin. These entire words exist in this verse. Origin of tabziir is bazara, which means “to spend lavishly, to disperse”. There is more exaggeration in the word tabziir, that is to say, “to waste, to squander”.

It has been commanded in this verse that after fulfilling your necessary requirements frugally and moderately, you should think about the necessities of other people, spare some portion from your wealth and give them. You should regard your close relatives according to classification. From the kinsfolk, most near are your mother and father. During financial troubles, you should help them. After them, you should support other kinsmen. Then other needy people and wayfarers should be helped. You should observe temperateness and moderation at every stage. The wealth is not for the purpose that it is spent lavishly on oneself or relatives. You should spend on yourself only as much that you may live comfortably according to fashion, if you can earn more. If you possess some extra money after fulfilling requirements, then you should give it to your kinsmen, neighbors, the necessitous and the poor. Those people are called brothers of Satan who squander their wealth in wantonness, extravagance, play and amusement. It is very shameful if one is brother of the Devil, who is an ingrate and accursed slave to his Real Lord. We should run away even from his shadow.
