Thinking too highly of oneself

Chapter Furqaan”- {The Criterion (of Right and Wrong)} - 25

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

21.  And those who look not for a meeting with Us say: Why are angels not sent down unto us and (why) do we not see our Lord! Assuredly they think too highly of themselves and are scornful with great pride.

Commentary

Prophets of Allaah Almighty (peace be upon them) and wise people of the world have proclaimed clearly that due to being ensnared in worldly casual desires, ease and comfort; human beings lose their wits. They see their benefit in it that the condition in which they acquire influence presently, should remain the same (as it is). They consider their death in its exchange. They do not think due to their personal advantages that if the present condition remained as it is for some more days, then its end will also be more dangerous. If the intelligent people cause to understand them, they get ready to vex them and try their best that either they should be stopped from talking or the common people should be prevented from listening to them.

The Infidels of Makkah had been suffering from the same mania. Their first effort was that no one should hear the Sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) in any condition. They had forgotten that they have to be present in the Court of Allaah Almighty after death.

In this verse, circumstances of such people have been described that those who look not for a meeting with Allaah Almighty, they say: Why the Angels do not come unto us and say! Allaah Almighty has sent this message for you that Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is His Messenger, or we had to see Allaah Almighty and He had certified that Muhammad is His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).

It is entirely refractoriness. They think too highly of themselves that they do not hear any other save Angels. They are so much scornful with great pride that they say: Allaah should speak with us Himself if He desires to say something. (Let us flee to Allaah)
