Commentary

Buur – {(those who were) ruined}, this word is plural of baa-‘ir; which is the Subject from the word bawr. Bawr and bawaar means “ruin, destruction”. This word has passed in Surah ‘Ibraahim.

On the Day of Resurrection, those people who forgot Allaah Almighty; will be standing on one side in His Court; and their self-made gods will be on the other side before them. For proving their crime, their self-fabricated gods will be asked: Did you say to them that they should adore you and turn away from Me (Allaah Almighty), or they themselves disbelieved in Me and chose you their protecting friends and gods? Remaining part of their answer has been mentioned in this part of the verse.

They will request: We had no power to compel them for our adoration. We were unable to do anything without Your support. Only You were our Protecting Friend and Supporter. These people did not perceive that why should they ask him for help who himself is an indigent?

The actual matter is that destruction was written in the lot of these wretched people. You bestowed to them and their fathers ease and a lot of comfortable things by Your Mercy. You made several of Your slaves obedient and submissive to them. They forgot You due to intoxication of their wealth and property.

It was compulsory for them that they had to know You by beholding abundant wealth and property which was in their possession, and prostrate before You being thankful, because in fact You were their Real Benefactor. And they were not so much stupid that they could not understand this ordinary matter that there is no one in the world who may give anything to any other. Whatsoever they possessed; was given by You, whatsoever is given; is given by You and whatsoever will be given; will be given by You. These unlucky people were able to be ruined. They themselves are responsible of their destruction and now they will suffer.
