42. If they deny thee
(Muhammad), even so the folk of Noah, and (the tribes of) ‘Aad and Thamud,
before thee, denied (Our Messengers) –

Abraham and the folk of Lot –

in Midian. And Moses was denied; but I indulged the disbelievers a
long while, then I seized them, and how (terrible) was My abhorrence!

Commentary
-‘Amlaytu – (I
indulged, I gave respite), it is past tense. Origin of this word is ‘umlii
which has passed in Suratul- ‘A’raaf.
It has been commanded in these verses: We have determined this
arrangement for keeping up the world for a specific period, that preserver
forces should overcome at the time of necessity upon the destroyer forces and
eradicate the evil and mischief. These forces of Good and Evil try to keep the
mankind a source of their work.
It is the reason that to acquaint the mankind with the both
forces and to make him able to take the side of Good, Allaah Almighty
set up sending a lineage of His Prophets (peace be upon them). This Office was
completed by the arrival of His last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon him).
Then it is being commanded to the Messenger (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon him): You should not be disheartened if the people
disobey you due to their ignorance and falsify you. Short-sightedness of the
mankind has tried always to incline them for opposing the Prophets (peace be
upon them). But the consequence of the opponents was always worse. We have
caused to hear you the circumstances of the ancient nations. You should cause
to hear those circumstances to these people too and say to them clearly: Allaah
Almighty will not let the evil to overcome upon the good. If these people
denied, then they would also be ruined like them. (We seek refuge in Allaah).
