Commentary

Sal-saalin – (the clay which is used for making pots, becomes hard after drying, and then if it is stroked, it begins to sound).

Hama-‘im-masnuun – (black stinking mud, kneaded clay), origin of masnuun is sanan. Sanan means “to pour water”.

Jaaannun – (father of geniis, demons – as Father of mankind is Adam (peace be upon him), like this, father of Geniis (Jinn) is jaaann. From them those who are more refractory, their chieftain is ‘Ibliis (Satan).

It is commanded: Attention! We prepared kneaded mud by mixing water and clay. Then We let it rot for a long time and then created from it a puppet of Adam. Then warm winds dried it up and due to severe heat, it became solid, and then it began to sound by winds. Before it, We had created Jaaann, the father of geniis. Severe heat of winds (into it) had burnt everything and it began to flame. From the blast (which was like a flame), its body was created, and after burning, the sign of clay had been removed from it.

But the heat could not burn the puppet of Adam and it became only like a pot of earthenware. It aims that full sign of clay remained in mankind, that is to say; hardness and weight (both) remained in it. Due to hardness it became visible to eyes and due to weight; it could not get up itself above the ground, whereas, entire particles of clay in geniis (demons) were burnt and became a flame of fire. From that flame of fire their bodies were created, in which, there is neither hardness and nor weight. Therefore, neither they are visible and nor it is difficult for them to fly above the surface of the land. Angles are even lighter than them i.e. they have been created from the Light.
