Commentary

Lujjiyyin – (abysmal, bottomless, unfathomable water).

There was description concerning those disbelievers, in the previous verse, who do good works according to their credence and consider that those works would be sufficient for their deliverance. Allaah Almighty commanded for such people: Because they do not have belief in Him, therefore their good works will be entirely useless. And Allaah Almighty will reckon their accounts immediately.

It has been commanded in this verse: The disbelievers who do not make distinction in good and evil works and have been involved in worldly joys, their condition is very terrible. Darknesses have been crowding upon them plait by plait, as deep sea in which, one darkness is of water’s depth, in addition darkness of waves’ storm which is covered by waves, upon which are waves. Moreover upon the darknesses of the dashing of waves, layers of clouds have been overcastting. Then the time of night, in short, darkness upon the darkness have been spreading everywhere. When one puts out his hand therein, he hardly can see it. If he raises his hand and brings it before his eyes, may not see it due to darkness that where his hand is. On the whole, he gets no reflection of light from anywhere. Source of light is Allaah Almighty only. Whoever became careless from this side, can get no light. Until the heart of the mankind does not believe in Allaah Almighty and He does not illuminate it, the light cannot be bestowed to him.
