Way of Joseph’s stay in Egypt

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

Commentary

Story-tellers have narrated this incident of Joseph (peace be upon him) in a different style, in which they have made a gross mistake. Joseph (peace be upon him) was brought up from the beginning in such a way that there was no chance of wicked and evil thoughts to settle in His heart. By the Qur-‘aan’s way of description, this affair becomes very clear in accordance with the verse under discussion that He (peace be upon him) did never desire her with the thought of evil or lewdness. His way of stay at this house was based on the same care, which He (peace be upon him) disclosed very clearly before the woman in due course; that He used to consider the person as own lord who was the owner of this house, and who was Aziz (the general agent of the King) of Egypt, and in this regard, He (peace be upon him) used to take it as His duty to respect and honor him. Moreover, he used to treat Joseph (peace be upon him) so honorably that He (peace be upon him) was clear in His mind that Aziz had full faith in Him (peace be upon him), and that He will never cause to lose his modesty and reputation.

The above mentioned verse ends at the point that “Allah Almighty had preplanned before time in this matter that mean thoughts of evil and lewdness should not make room in the heart of Joseph (peace be upon him) because He had made him His chosen slave before this. How could then thoughts of evil and lewdness come in his heart? Therefore, certainly the meaning of hamma  bihaa (he would have desired her); in this light; would be that “all at once, a thought in respect of that woman came in His heart at the same time. Before this, He (peace be upon him) used to respect and honor her as a wife of His lord and benefactor. Beholding the behavior of the woman, He (peace be upon him) was impressed with sudden surprise, and He thought about those moral principles, which had taken place in His heart with effect from His childhood. And He found himself entangled in wretchedness. And which word came out rash at first from His mouth, was “Ma-‘aazAllaah” (I seek refuge in God), which should come on the tongue of every Believer at the time of any calamity.

Then, He (Joseph - peace be upon him) did show that He had been looking always this woman with the only view that she was wife of His lord and patron. He can never change himself for her.

Wicked and evil thoughts remain always very far from the hearts of those people; to whom Allah Almighty makes His chosen servant.

Warding off from Joseph evil and lewdness

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

   وَلَقَدْ هَمَّتْ بِهِۦ وَهَمَّ بِهَا لَوْلَآ أَن رَّءَا بُرْهَٰنَ رَبِّهِۦكَذَٰلِكَ لِنَصْرِفَ عَنْهُ ٱلسُّوٓءَ وَٱلْفَحْشَآءَ إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ (24

24.  And she verily desired him, and he would have desired her if it had not been that he saw the argument of his Lord. Thus it was in order that We might ward off from him evil and lewdness. Lo! He was of Our chosen Slaves.  
24.  Wa  laqad  hammat  bih.  Wa  hamma  bihaa  law-laaa  ‘arra-‘aa  burhaana  Rabbih.  Kazaalika  linas-rifa  ‘anhus-suuu-‘a  wal-fah-shaaa’.  ‘Inna-huu  min  ‘ibaa-diNal-Mukh-lasiin.

Commentary

Qad  hammat  bih – (she was already desirous of him), that is to say, the woman {wife of Aziz (general agent of the King of Egypt)} had been inclined unto Joseph (peace be upon him) from the very beginning. The word hammat is past feminine tense from hamma. Hammun means “to pay attention or regard to, to be inclined. Wa  hamma  bihaa – (and he turned his attention to her). It is past masculine from the same word hammun, i.e. when that woman decorated this all delusion, then Joseph (peace be upon him) began to think about her condition.

Law-laaa – (if it had not been), this is a conditional word, which has been mentioned, but its reply has not been described, because here, that can be understood easily, that is to say, “otherwise; he would have been entangled in evil”.

In this verse, one word “hamma” has been used for the both {the woman and Joseph (peace be upon him)}, but another word Qad has been used for the woman only, which aims “to perform or commit a work beforehand”, whereas it has not been used with the name of Joseph (peace be upon him), which aims that “he thought about it recently, although the woman desired him since long and she was on the look out for opportunity to tempt him”. But Joseph (peace be upon him) did never think about her from this point of view. When He (peace be upon him) observed her impatience at the spot, then He (peace be upon him) began to think about her condition.

In short, neither He (peace be upon him) ever was desirous of that woman before this time and nor was He looking her with evil eye when it happened. Moreover, He (peace be upon him) was looking her condition sorrowfully and with the act of kindness.

It is commanded: We kept Him pure and away even from evil deeds and wicked thoughts, and saved Him from committing error because We had already chosen Him (peace be upon him) as Our slave.

Care for the supporter’s honor

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

  قَالَ مَعَاذَ ٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُۥ رَبِّىٓ أَحْسَنَ مَثْوَاىَ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ  (23  b)

23b.  He said: I seek refuge in Allah! Lo! he is my lord, who hath treated me honourably. Lo! Wrongdoers never prosper.
23b.  Qaala  ma-‘aazAllaahi  ‘innahuu  Rabbiii  ‘ahsana  mas-waay.  ‘Innahuu  laa  yuf-lihuz-zaali-muun.

Commentary

The actual thing, which prevents from evil deeds, is fear of God Almighty. If the nourisher of a child lay down a Map of God’s Epithets in his mind from the beginning, then in the future life, this concept of Allah Almighty keeps the child saved from many awful habits and disgraceful sins. Perfect human nature claims that he should not misbehave with the person, who is his guardian and benefactor, and who treated him honorably. The child is always grateful to his mother and father, and as long as his age increases, his sense describes him continuously that they are his patrons. “Treating them well is my personal duty”.

Now, if the parents are such who train the child correctly, they can cause to understand the child thoroughly that “Actual Lord and Patron of the mankind is Allah Almighty. It is He, Who has put affection with His Mercy, in the hearts of parents, due to which, they nourish their child. Indeed, only He is the Protector, the Fulfiller of the necessities and the Savior at all dangerous occasions. Therefore, we should seek refuge every time in Him (God Almighty) only, because the parents can be separated, but Allah Almighty is every time with the mankind, He beholds him, is Redresser of his grievances, and helps him in calamities. So the human beings should be saved from wicked deeds and sins, because these are cause of God’s anger, and to displease own Lord is very bad.

If there is a fear of being entangled in any sin or evil, then one should call immediately to Allah Almighty for help. And he should beg before Him for refuge from the sins. Joseph (peace be upon him) was an intelligent person by birth, in addition, His Father was also a Prophet, Who used to teach him usually. When Joseph (peace be upon him) observed that He has been surrounded by mischief, it came out from His mouth immediately “I seek refuge in Allah (Ma-aazAllaah)”. And He (peace be upon him) supplicated heartily “My Lord! Save me from this sin. Allah Almighty revealed at once in his heart “she is wife of Aziz, who is my supporter. Committing such abject sin with his wife will be cause of his disgrace.

Joseph (peace be upon him) said to the woman: Aziz is my guardian. He has kept me comfortably. It would be a great violence, if I committed evil with you.

Demand of an improper act

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

وَرَٰوَدَتْهُ ٱلَّتِى هُوَ فِى بَيْتِهَا عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ وَغَلَّقَتِ ٱلْأَبْوَٰبَ وَقَالَتْهَيْتَ لَكَ (23  a)

23a.  And she, in whose house he was, asked of him an evil act. She bolted the doors and said: Come! 
23a.  Wa  raa-wadat-hullatii  hu-wa  fii  bay-tihaa  ‘an-nafsihii  wa  galla-qatil-  ‘abwaaba  wa  qaalat  hay-ta  lak.     

Commentary

‘An-nafsihii – (asked of him an evil act), soul of the human being is magazine of desires. Sense keeps it under control. Here, it aims, “that woman wished to draw out the desire of Joseph (peace be upon him) from the care of His sense, so that it should incline His heart unto the woman”.

Hay-ta  lak – {Come!, Have done with (something)!}, this word has been derived from Hebrew language, which is spoken at such time; when all necessary things are available before the doer and then he is invited for further necessary action. Other word “ta-‘aala” exists in Arabic language for this purpose.

This verse describes that the woman, in whose house, Joseph (peace be upon him) used to live, she demanded an improper act from Him (peace be upon him) and arranged such situation, by which, it might be impossible for a young man to control himself. She decorated the room with exciting things, adorned and dressed herself very beautifully, and not only this, but she provoked verbally also: Why are you delaying now?

Jacob (peace be upon him) nourished His son Joseph (peace be upon him) under particular attention, and due to His practical instance and verbal instructions, gentleness, order and temperateness had been produced in the entire powers of His brain and heart. Now, when He (peace be upon him) was a matured youth, had a connection with quite a new condition. It is very difficult for such person to control himself, who is a newly youth and physically; he is fit in all respect. Only that person can come out from such whirlpool, whom Allah Almighty has favored especially. If any beautiful woman tries her best herself, to tempt any strong and healthy man, it will be nearly impossible for him to be saved from the sin.    

We should learn from it that being intermixed of young boys and girls frankly and unreasonable is a very unbecoming affair.

God rewards the good people

وَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥٓ ءَاتَيْنَٰهُ حُكْمًا وَعِلْمًا وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ (22)

22.  And when he reached his prime We gave him wisdom and knowledge. And thus We reward the good.   
22.  Wa  lammaa  balaga  ‘a-shud-dahuuu  ‘aatay-Naahu  huk-manw-wa  ‘ilmaa.  Wa  kazaa-lika  Najzil-Muh-siniin.      

Commentary

‘A-shud-da – (prime, blooming, maturity, puberty), it is a solitary word, which means power and strength. It has passed in Suratul-‘An-‘aam, where it means youth, full age, adolescence. This word has been derived from sh-d-d, from which the word shiddat is a noun. Shiddat means strength, firmness etc. Balaga  ‘a-shud-dahuuu , that is to say; he became adult and attained the marriage age.

Difficulties and disasters are just like a carpenter’s plane for the passions of a mankind, and make him well-shaped and graceful by planning, rubbing and wearing of unnecessarily increased corners of his body. From which the circumstances, Joseph (peace be upon him) had to go through, those became best source for His training.

The lesson accrued from these verses is that actual development of physical, of the brain and cordial powers may be before the age of maturity, that is to say; in the childhood. And the best way of their correction and training is causing to understand softly and lightly by the elders; and along with it; producing before them a role model of good habits. After that, if the child passes through such circumstances, by which he knows practically the way of correction of his habits himself, the result of it would be that such child would be intelligent and wise after being an adult.

In the powers of brain, actual thing is meditation by the human being. Meditation means “linking and putting the things in order which come in notice, and conclude the principles from them, upon which the correction of his body depends. Out of the hearty powers; there are wisdom and intention. Wisdom is the power which gives the intention under the control of perfect meditation, and does not let it be obedient of the passions.

Joseph (peace be upon him) had been trained physically, intellectually and heartily during his childhood. Therefore, when He (peace be upon him) was matured, He was a wise and a scholar (both). When a mankind reaches the age of marriage; wish of lust grows. If the sense is proper, it can better the desire also during the age of adolescence.

وَ كَذَٰ لِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلِنُعَلِّمَهُۥ مِن تَأْوِيلِ ٱلْأَحَادِيثِ وَٱللَّهُ غَالِبٌ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرِهِۦ
وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ   (b21

21b.  And thus We established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events. And Allah is Dominant over His affairs, but most of mankind know not.  
21b.  Wa  kazaa-lika  mak-kanNaa  li-Yuusufa  fil-‘arzi,  wa  linu-‘allima-huu  min-  ta’-wiilil- ‘ahaadiis.  Wallaahu  Gaalibun  ‘alaaa  ‘amriHii  wa  laa-kinna  ‘aksa-rannaasi  laa  ya’-lamuun.     

Commentary

Mak-kanNaa – (We established), it is a past tense from the word tamkiin. Tamkiin has come out from makaan. Makaan means abode, place for dwelling. Tamkiin means “to provide dwelling place”.

Ta’-wiilil- ‘ahaadiis – (the interpretation of events), this word has passed in the first Section – to recognize correctly from the events, to explain the dream.

When Allah Almighty desires to grant something to His any particular servant, He produces causes for it, and such events begin to happen, which cause to arrive him eventually; at any special degree, excellence and greatness, though the observers do not understand this matter that “why have these occurrences been happening”? The circumstances through which Joseph (peace be upon him) passed, by them, the aim was to teach Him (peace be upon him), although those were apparently very painful.

It was the result of those entire happenings that Joseph reached Egypt, and there, a general agent of the King of Egypt purchased and admitted Him (peace be upon him) in his house, and he said to his wife: Receive this Boy honorably.

The object from these all circumstances was that Joseph (peace be upon him) should join the people of higher community by means of Aziz-e-Misr (the general agent of the King of Egypt), hear their conversation and observe their way of working. Next in time, it happened that He (peace be upon him) began to think about safety in difficulties. So resultantly, He (peace be upon him) became at home in management and began to interpret about the events accurately.

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِى ٱشْتَرَىٰهُ مِن مِّصْرَ لِٱمْرَأَتِهِۦٓ أَكْرِمِى مَثْوَىٰهُ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَنفَعَنَآ أَوْ نَتَّخِذَهُۥ وَلَدًا   (21a)

21a.  And he of Egypt who purchased him said unto his wife: Receive him honourably, perchance he may prove useful to us or we may adopt him as a son.
21a.  Wa  qaalal-lazish-taraahu  mim-Misra  limra-‘atihii  ‘ak-rimii  mas-waahu  ‘asaaa  ‘any-yanfa-‘anaaa  ‘aw  natta-khi-zahuu  waladaa.

Commentary

Mas-waa – this word may have two meanings - living and place for living. Its Origin is sawaa-‘un, which means “dwelling”.

‘Ak-rimii – (Render honor to him!) It is a word of command from the word ‘ikraam, origin of which is “karam. Karam means “favor, grace, bounty, excellence, graciousness etc.” ‘Ikraam means “respecting, commending, treading with civility and formality”. ‘Ak-rimii  mas-waahu would be meant as “you should establish a way of living for him like the people of a higher class”.

In this verse, it has been described shortly that “someone purchased him (Joseph) in Egypt”, but whatsoever was happened before, has not been explained. By connecting the both verses, it is known that the caravan under reference came out from its native country for the purpose of trading and earning profit, passed, in the way, nearby that pit, in which Joseph (peace be upon him) was placed by his brothers. When the water-drawer let down his pale into the pit, Joseph (peace be upon him) sat into the pale. The water-drawer pulled it out and cried gladly: Good luck! Here is a youth, who will be sold in abundant price.

The people of the caravan desired to hide him considering a thing of trade, but the brothers of Joseph were in search of Him. They traced and found Him (peace be upon him). However, they sold Him in more or less and removed their confusion heartlessly. By moving on, this caravan reached Egypt and produced Joseph (peace be upon him) in its Bazaar for selling as a slave. One individual purchased Him (peace be upon him).

After that, it has been described in this verse that the person; who purchased Joseph (peace be upon him), brought Him before his wife and said: it seems that this boy is very intelligent. Keep Him honorably, not like slaves. I hope that we shall reap advantage by Him in future. We still have no child, so I thought: We may adopt Him as our son. 

The Commentators (Mufassiriin) have described that he was Aziz-e-Misr (General Agent of the King of Egypt), his name was Qatfir and his wife’s name was Zulaykha or Ra-‘iil.

 وَشَرَوْهُ بِثَمَنٍۭ بَخْسٍ دَرَٰهِمَمَعْدُودَةٍ وَكَانُوا۟ فِيهِ مِنَ ٱلزَّٰهِدِينَ (20

20.  And they sold him for a low price, a number of silver coins, and they attached no value to him.      
20.  Wa  sha-rawhu  bi-samanim- bakh-sin-  daraa-hima  ma’-duudah.  Wa  kaanuu  fiihi  minaz-zaahi-diin.   

Commentary

Bakh-sin – (low, deficient, little, less, few, reduced), this word means “very little, very less”. Like the same, a word “laa  yub-kha-suun” has pass in Surah Huud, which means “they will not be wronged”.

Daraa-hima – it is plural of darham, which was a silver coin of those days, and which may be estimated as equal to “one $” at this time. Daraa-hima  ma’-duudah – (few dollars).

Zaahi-diin – (considering valueless, not indulgent), this word is plural of Zaahid, which has been derived from “zuhd”. Zuhd means “to be averse, to be disinclined, to consider valueless”.

Sha-rawhu – (they sold him), it is a past tense from sha-ra-ya, which means “buying and selling (both). However, here it aims “selling”.

It has been described that after flinging Joseph (peace be upon him) into the depth of the pit, His brothers had not been thoughtless, but they used to be vigilant of Him. One day, when they went on the ridge of the pit, did not find Joseph (peace be upon him) in it, but saw a caravan, which was deployed before them. They approached the caravan and said: A slave of ours has run away and you have hidden him. Either you should lay him open, otherwise you will be fixed as criminals. They were frightened and disclosed Joseph (peace be upon him).

In the inmost heart, they were desirous that someone should take him away in any other city, because they truly; used to burn from him with jealousy, and there was a hope of satisfaction; if He (peace be upon him) had been gone. They settled a bargain with the people of caravan, so that they might be made His masters in truth. And they should keep Him in view; considering that He (peace be upon him) was their property, and sell Him in any other big city. They were not desirous of getting His abundant price, so a few silver coins were fixed as His nominal price.

It has been mentioned in Maoza-hul-Qur’an {A Book of Explanation – (Tafseer)} that they sold Joseph (peace be upon him) against only eighteen Darhams (Darham was a silver coin at that time). These eighteen Darhams were distributed among nine brothers according to the ratio of two Darhams per head. One brother, named Yahuda, who was already in favor of soft behavior with Joseph (peace be upon him) said: I shall not get any part from this sum (During the year 1976, price of a Darham was Rupees 4 ½).
